I'm so sorry but this is a long post. 20 pictures! This finishes up the National Register of Historic Places on Main street - Linwood to 42nd. The application for the National Register was dated 1978 and was called South Side Historic District. Today this is midtown. Nearly all of the buildings on Main are included but I only took pictures of the ones I liked. I'm sure not many people have the old building love that I do.
The 3835 Main building opened as the Tocama Apartments in 1928 and was in 1931 renamed the Netherlands Hotel, continuing to serve as an apartment building and hotel.
The city deemed it a dangerous building. Shortly thereafter, it was renovated and renamed the Hawthorne Plaza Apartments.
Hyde Park Building, 2-8 East 39th
The building opened in 1916

Martha Washington Candy Company, 1912
and Grand Emporium opened in May 1982 as a bar, restaurant, and live music venue with plans for hostel-style rooms to rent on the second floor.

Originally South Side Bank, 3838 S. Main, 1920.
Originally the· first floor featured a two-bay facade, with an entry to the bank
on the south and a storefront on the north. The bank eventually took over the
entire first floor.
The doorway is placed between two Corinthian columns.
These columns are falling apart and need work.
Meyer's Building. 1926
The Southwell Building, 3941 Main
One of the most distinctive buildings on Main
Street, this two story large commercial building is an Art Deco achievement designed in 1929
I have wondered what this building was since I first saw it.
Government Employees Hospital Association, #2 West 40th Street
This three-story
white limestone office building was constructed in 1930 for $100,000.
It originally housed Standard Oil Company's general office.
I'm not sure if you can see clearly in the picture.
Only the front of the building still exists.
It looks like to me the rest of the building has been rebuilt.
Long Post!! We are done with this area of Main Street.
I had so much fun walking around. At the moment Main St is one lane in each direction for the street car construction. Just in case you might wonder - yes, people do look at me while I'm standing in the blocked lane on the street taking pictures. I don't care. They don't know me.
Until tomorrow.
