As I was planning our adventure today I found that most of the museums are closed on Mondays. Every time I thought I had it worked out something was closed. So we went on a driving trip today.
Our first stop was at 34th and Broadway at the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US National Headquarters (VFW) 34th and Broadway
Across the street was a massive church. Just gorgeous.
I copied this from their website: When the Redemptorist priests settled between the frontier towns of Westport and Kansas City in 1878, they never dreamt of establishing a parish. They were missionaries. They built a mission house, high on a hill, overlooking verdant meadows. From there, they traveled to the newly settled towns of the Midwest, preaching missions. Soon neighboring Catholics befriended the priests and brothers and began worshiping with them in their chapel. As the congregation grew, the Redemptorists were invited to establish a new parish on the mission house grounds. In 1888, the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was founded, but to this day, the church is still widely referred to as “Redemptorist.”
And no I did not try to go inside. Mostly because I didn't want to try to cross the street.
This is the inside from their website.
Our next stop was the Loose Mansion. Today it is an event venue.
Mr. Loose made the Hydrox cookie and Sunshine crackers.
Down the street we found The Slabs. From my research I believe this is a skateboard park. The slabs go up to an old swimming pool.
Mineral Hall was our next stop. Mineral Hall was the residence of Roland E. Bruner. He bought the building in 1905 after it had been built for William A. Rule. It was a second home in the city for Rule and he never occupied it having had it built "to maintain the quality of the neighborhood". The house was built for $25,000.
There houses were all down the street from Mineral Hall. Most of them are hotels now. I believe this is the Hyde Park neighbor. Most of the houses look like these. The neighborhood is old and beautiful. I could have just driven up and down the streets taking pictures of the houses.
The is the Jannes Library at the Kansas City Art Institute. The statue is of Thomas Hart Benton. The Library is in the background. We will be touring his house soon. He is a popular artist from Kansas City.
I was looking for several other sites but could not find them. This area along Main street is torn up because of the street car expansion. There are roads that are closed and detours everywhere. Even though we went to multiple sites instead of 1 it was still lots of fun. Actually my driving was quite funny. Google maps and I have many conversions during our adventures.
Until our next adventure.
