Several weeks ago I stopped by Washington Park. It's located between Union Station and Crown Center. I wanted to do several things here. I needed a good picture of the Western Auto sign and the George Washington statue. I found several other things.
This building is located at 2345 Grand Blvd.
Completed in 1977.
The building was originally intended to be the western headquarters of Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company and an IBM office.
There are multiple business housed here.
A law firm has the top 9 floors.
The Firestone Building and its giant blue “Abdiana” sign can be seen a block north of Western Auto on Grand. Though Abdiana Properties now owns the building, the original sign read “Firestone,” the letters mimicking a fiery blaze.
A Coca-Cola sign once sat atop the Western Auto building. Having procured the drink’s recipe in 1892, Asa Griggs Candler — Georgia business tycoon — needed a good distribution spot. He selected the strange, triangular plot of land on Grand Boulevard.
After noticing the demand for Ford Model T parts, a bookkeeper named George Pepperdine leased the fourth floor of the building as a corporate headquarters for Western Auto in 1928.
By June 1952, the firm had purchased and invested over $300,000 in renovations and additions, including a new 30-ton, 70-by-73-foot sign displaying its name in massive red letters encircled by an arrow.
In 2000, after Western Auto had been bought out by Sears — which was, in turn, consumed by Advance Auto Parts — the sign was switched off. It remained that way until condo renovations took place in the coming years, and the Western Auto Lofts homeowners’ association deciding to fund the great relighting.
2,500 incandescent bulbs and 1,000 feet of neon tubing, the Western Auto sign was relit on July 13, 2018.
Next is a building I found downtown but never found a place to show it.
920 Main Street is called Ten Main Center. Built in 1968.
AMC Entertainment was headquartered here.
Today it is owned by the Price Brothers.
They also owned Mother Earth Coffee and that building.
This apartment building has preferred employers.
There is an application fee, move-in fee, special fees per unit, and you have to pay for parking too.
A 1 bed (600 sq ft) $1300 and 2 bed/2bath (1000 sq ft) $ 2,200 - 2,300
These are the starting prices then add on the monthly fees.
But on the plus side it's next door to the downtown Central Library.
That's all. I have used all of my saved posts even this one with just random stuff I saw and liked. It is 5 with a wind chill of -7 right now. I have been starting my car everyday. This morning the car showed -5 as the temp. It is forecasted to be a balmy 20 degrees tomorrow. I will be getting out. I even cancelled dinner plans today because of the cold. Charlie's walks are getting quicker and quicker. This is how long it's been cold - Charlie and I thought it was warm yesterday at 5pm. We had a nice long walk. It was only -9 instead of -25.
Until tomorrow.
