I'm back in Swope Park. I have a list of things to find.
This is the Southeast Community Center.
It is closed for electrical work.
The bandstand
There is suppose to be a tree painted pink.
It was a dead tree.
The artist was had cystic fibrosis, and had 2 lung transplants.
The tree represented his lungs and bronchial tubes.
He painted it pink and covered it in glitter in 2018.
After he painted it, leaves started growing.
I just can't find it.
Swope Interpretative Center
This was built as a shelter house, at the entrance to the park.
Today it holds meetings and exhibits.
There is suppose to be a person there everyday.
Not today.
Lead glass windos
This is one both sides of the building.
Back Porch
Back view
Kansas City's First Public Golf Course
Behind the shelter house is a non-working drinking fountain.
At the top it says - Dedicated by Kansas City to the American Legion Posts.
Kansas City is all about WW1
Beside it is Loose Memorial Flag Pole, 1915
A gift to the city from Mr. Loose.
The base took 22 horses to pull the stone from the freight yard.
In 1915, it was the tallest pole in the country.
There was an Eagle on top with a 6 foot wind span.
During a windstorm the eagle fell and was never put back.
Ethnic Enrichment Commission
Swope Park is the location of the Ethnic Festival each year.
Alfred Benjamin Memorial
He established a foundation for Jewish Charities in Kansas City.
That's it, I was hot and hungry.
I think we are almost done with Swope Park. There is another section I'm not going to photograph. Soccer and baseball fields, public swimming pool, disc golf course, and a golf course. Don't forget the Zoo and Starlight theater are here too.
Tomorrow we go to the zoo.
