Sites in the Argentine Neighborhood

I really did not have a plan for this week.  The wall construction just really threw the schedule out.  Today we went back to the book, Secret Kansas City, for our adventure.  That took us to the Argentine neighborhood in Kansas.

Our first stop is the White Feather Spring Plaque.

This is truly right beside someone's yard.

This ancient spring marks the heart of the last prophetstown of the Shawnee Indians.  The hut of the Shawnee prophet Tensquatawa, brother of the great Techumseh, stood above the spring.  He died and was buried here in 1837, a broken and forgotten man, his dream of an Indian Confederacy smashed at  Tippecanoe in 1812.

Techumseh was a Shawnee leader working with the British against the United States in the War of 1812.  He fought against future president William Henry Harrison at the Battle of the Thames.  Chief Techumseh was killed.  His brother, Tensquatawa was so angry that he put a curse on Harrison.  President Harrison died in 1841 after only 31 days in office.

Stop 2 was not planned.  You should know by now I love murals.  I passed this one on the way to stop 1.

That's it.  It took a long time to post of the pictures in order.  This went on for over a block.

On to stop 3.

This is a stairway built in 1913.  It was the only way up the hill at the time.

For the last stop I had to drive up this hill.  It's a really big hill.  I was hoping I wouldn't flip all the way down the hill.  You would need a longer stairway.

Last Stop  - Sauer Castle

It's being restored now.

I watched a show about this castle years ago.  The owner wouldn't do anything and let it fall into disrepair.  At the time of the show he refused to sell the castle.  I would have to assume it has new owners now.  I would say after the restoration I plan to come back but I don't want to drive up that hill again.

I painted again this morning.  I hate painting but almost being done inspires me.  I have to start working on the fireplace edges.  They had a very cheap looking trim up instead of finishing the edges next to the sheetrock.

Until tomorrow.
