Shawnee Indian Mission and other things

I was determined to stay on track today.  So off to Kansas we went.

Stop 1: Westwood City Fountain

Stop 2: The Shawnee Indian Mission
They were not open yet so on we went.

Stop 3: Granada Skate Park.  I didn't even realize it existed.  I shop at the Price Chopper across the street.

Really cool Dragon Fly Sculpture

Not sure what this is.

Now back on track.

Stop 4: Soar
In front of Highlands Elementary

It was really pretty.  The pictures just don't show it that well.

Now back to the Shawnee Indian Mission.  It was open.

When it was a Union soldier station

Rev Johnson who ran the mission
He was a slave owner who later moved to Missouri.
Johnson County in Kansas is named after him.

Lots of wagons stopped by the mission and would buy supplies.

Newly built cabin but built by hand with only tools available in the 1800s

Main building of the museum

There are 3 natural springs on this property.

North Building

It was really interesting.  From 1839 to 1862 it was a mission, 22 tribes sent their children here. It had 2000 acres (only 12 acres today).  Only 3 of the 16 buildings are still standing.   During the civil was Union soldiers were housed here.  Before Kansas became a state this was the head quarters of the territory.  In 1927 the Kansas State Historical Society bought the property.  A lot of history has happened in these buildings.

The volunteer who was there today was fabulous.  I forgot her name but we probably talked for an hour.  She said many of their displays  showing Indian articles  were removed.  They were from all museums.  She was also telling me that the Shawnee tribe wants this property.  They aren't sure what Kansas will do.  I told her about our adventures.  She thought it sounded great and even made some suggestions.

I also got my passport to adventure stamped.

Until tomorrow.
