Lenexa's Spinach Festival

Today in search of something to do I found the Lenexa Spinach Festival.  Fact: Lenexa isn't far from Olathe.  I went anyway.  I read the all of the info and it said to park at 95th street and take the shuttle to Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park.

So I did.

I wanted to sign up for the history tour.  It took me a minute but I found the booth.  There were 2 of us on the tour.  This park was given to Sar-Ko-Par by President Lincoln.  Sar-Ko-Par fought against the Indians on the side of the government.  He never lived here.  After a long court battle the Rose Family bought the property in the 1950s.

The pond was dug by the Rose family.
It's much bigger now.

The Rose family let the community ice skate on the pond.

The pond even has a sea monster.

I also found a statue called Grandpa.

They had a meet and greet for the goats who were laying under the tree.

They had music.
Chill Phil Steel Drums

Fun games

World's Largest Spinach Salad

Lots of tents

Even more people
There were gobs of people there.

I even got Lenexa swag.

Sitting on the bus while going back to my car.
This is the entrance to the park.

The story of the spinach.  Think back to when Popeye  and Olive Oyl  were popular.  A business man from St. Louis wanted to buy spinach but wasn't happy with the quality in St. Louis.  He searched and found it in Kansas.  Most of the spinach was grown in Shawnee, Kansas but the railroad was in Lenexa.  The country was buying spinach because of Popeye and a business was born.  Lenexa took credit for being the spinach capital.

I planned to say I will never go back to Lenexa.  But .... On the way home I found their mall with Dillards and Macys and across the street Hobby Lobby and DSW.  I will probably go back.  I would also like to check out the historic downtown but I'm not in a hurry.

One more thing - Popeye and Olive Oyl were walking around for pictures.  I saw them while the tour.  After the tour I could not find them anyway.  I really didn't feel like fighting the crowds to find them.

Until tomorrow.
