Our last sign!
R.T. Coles, Vocational and Junior High School
Edited: This is a Native Son and Daughter Sign!
I missed it. Sign #22 / 38 to find.
Summary: At this location the R. T. Coles Vocational and Junior High School opened in 1936. It was named for Richard Thomas Coles for his involvement in Kansas City education. He was a teacher and principal who introduced new methods of education for African American children by providing industrial training starting in the 5th grade. He worked in education for 44 years.
The Vocational and Junior High School offered general shop classes and industrial training programs. They issued trade certificates. After Brown vs. Board of Education this school was desegregated in 1954-1955. The vocational division was transferred to another vocational school in Kansas City. This school was for 20 years the only school offering African American students educational skills in industrial and Manual training. The school was closed in 1956 and demolished in 1965.
It's cloudy, windy and cold.
Heading to our next stop - I found a fire.
Fire trucks had been speeding by me.
