Nelson Atkins Survival of the Fittest+ 1 sign

We are going to see the new exhibit at the Nelson Atkins today.  On the way we of course needed to pick up one brown sign.

This is William Rockhill Nelson.

His house was once where the museum is now located.
He had a hand in developing most of this area.

On the back side is his eulogy, Citizen.

I have been here so many times but I have never seen this marker before.

Down the street is this beauty.
4520 Kenwood Ave

It was built for Laura Nelson, daughter of William Rockhill Nelson.
Later it became The Rockhill Tennis Club.
Several past presidents have stayed here.

It's also for sale.
$1,547,775 and the price has been dropped $50K
7 bed and 8.5 bath, 12000 sq ft
Just in case anyone is in the market for a mansion.

Across the street at the museum at the exhibit, Survival of the Fittest

This is the favorite for the day.
Etched glass.

He was the second place favorite.

This painting looked like a picture.

The entire exhibit is of animals.  I liked it a lot.

I also finished my Field Guide and received a patch.

I plan on tracking all of the fountains I find this year.
These are inside the museum and the artist is Isamu Noguchi.

The lawn looked so beautiful.

Last thing for the day -

I have never really paid attention to this.

It's the Mississippi River.

That's it for today.  Until tomorrow.

Game 3 of Royals 2025 Season

I went with my family to the first game for us of the 2025 season.  It is the third game of the Royals season.  They have 1 win, 1 lost and I believe it will not be going the Royals way today.  We left before the game was over.

Before the game started I walked to the other side of the stadiums and found the brown sign.

Summary: Jackson County Sports Complex Authority established in 1967 to act as landlords to the Royals and Chiefs.  This was the nation's first side-by-side arenas.  First games were played in the 70s.
It talks about the sales tax KCMO pays for the arenas.  The last paragraph is about the playoff games played here since 2015.

Native Sons and Daughters sign.  #20 / 40 signs to find
But I have a new list of about 600 signs!!

Lamar Hunt

Kauffman Stadium from the East

It was 55 today - perfect temperature.
But it was so windy!!

This is me.  I probably over did it but that wind was brutal.
Yes, I have my Royals baseball hat on.

The game on Thursday was sold out but not so today.

TV Man Recording Game

It was fun.  We got a Veggie Supreme Pizza that was amazing.  I got a $11 hot chocolate in a souvenir cup from the 2024 Post Season.  Luckily Chris wanted that cup.  It was good hot chocolate.

Until tomorrow.

Walk with a Doc Failure and I was asked to leave

Today I had signed up to take part in the monthly Walk with a Doc, Loose Park, Last Saturday of the month, 9 am.  It sounded fun.  I have been thinking about doing this for a while but they were not super close to me.  Finally I found this one close to me.

The Cherry Trees were blooming.
I couldn't find this group anywhere.
I asked people who looked like they were waiting for something.
I got started walking and looking for people.

A brown sign.
The French and the Osage

Bad Picture
I stopped at the pickle ball courts to email the doctor to ask where they meet in Loose Park.

I found a rock

Another brown sign.

This is where it went wrong.

I crossed the street and walked around the school.

I wanted to see this house.

They had art.

Other side of the house.

More Art

Really neat buildings

1926

This is when a security guard walked up to me and asked what I was doing on private property and why was I taking pictures of a private school.  You know me ...  I thought the house was pretty.  I was asked to leave the property.  First time that has happened.

I crossed the street to get back to the park and took another picture.

I found another brown sign.

There was a sign I could not find several months ago.
Today I found the post.

One more picture of this beautiful park.

So, I walked for an hour and never found the group.  I was asked to leave private property.  I found a rock sign and brown signs.  Great adventure.

Until tomorrow.

Windy Random Stops

I had a plan for today.  Then I decided to go with plan B.  Then last night I found lists of about 600 brown signs!!  Anyone who reads this blog knows I love old buildings and brown signs!  So we went with plan C with distractions.

Our guide on the Rosedale Hike told us about this place.

The Southwest Boulevard Fire

Old clip from YouTube

This stop gets us one stop closer to finishing the Rosedale adventure.
I think there are 2-3 stops left.

Westport High School

The Westport High School now is an apartment building.

The same company has turned the Westport Middle School across the street into a co-working/business building.

At the top you can barely see a stone structure.

Yes I was walking all over.
This picture shows both buildings.

They left this.

I have seen this in the middle of Hyde Park for awhile.

Westport and Independence Road
Link in the Santa Fe Trail
Marked by the Kansas City Chapter D.A.R.
1821 1921

I really don't understand.  Either road is at this location but streets have been renamed since 1921.

One last stop for today.

Pilgrim Lutheran church for the Deaf and Parsonage.
Constructed in 1941.  Rare example of a religious building constructed by and for a special needs congregation.  The Church of Silence provided services until it closed in 1987.
In 1997, Pilgrim Chapel was acquired for use as a public chapel for all people of all faiths.

It's just so cute.

Not bad for plan C.  I got everything finished early so I can visit my sister/friend this afternoon.

Until tomorrow.

Wine Tasting

Really out of my comfort zone but tonight I went a wine tasting.   The HOA president told me about it last Friday. I walk to the end of the...
