Charlie's Friday Adventure

It will be close to 70 degrees today.  Charlie has had a crappy winter weather February so the last day of the month is his adventure.

We went to Union Cemetery and walked.

We smelled lots of leaves.

I think he was enjoying himself.

We saw Alexander Majors.
One of the founders, owners and operators of the Pony Express.

The cemetery is close to downtown and is surrounded by homes.

He found a house.

We found a pet grave.

We found more leaves.

After about 45 minutes we decided we were tired.

Charlie had fun.  He needs to go on more long walks.  This is such a nice place to walk.  I think I could see other people most of the time we were there.  Their website describes it as a 27 acre park.

Charlie is sleeping now.

Until tomorrow.

Jackson Co Courthouse Black History Month and other downtown buildings

I made it to one more Black History month event at the Jackson County Courthouse.

The Jackson County Courthouse

Andrew Jackson
Jackson County is named after him.
"This statue reminds us that history bends toward justice."

This is the exhibit

Built in 1934

The beautiful elevators

Embarrassing but I didn't know how to run the elevators.
You select the floor you want then the elevator comes for you.
A very nice maintenance man came to help me.  Actually he just did it for me
and told me when to get on the right elevator.

close-up

Very nice display
Now I have to go back downstairs.

I took the stairs this time.
It was much easier.

Today people noticed I was taking pictures.
A lady stopped and asked what I was photographing.
The nice art deco grill because I think it's pretty.
This lead to a 5 min talk about heaters in the 60s and 70s that would burn you.

US Courthouse
Getting lots of work done

At this location on October 13, 1887, President Grover Cleveland laid the cornerstone and dedicated a new YMCA building.  Within a decade, the property was lost and a new YMCA was built.
The original cornerstone remains at this site.

Cleveland's visit included a reception at the first Federal Courthouse.

This counterstone was laid on October 13, 1887 by the President of the United States of America.
It's very hard to read.

Oak Tower Building
Built in 1917 - 1920

Also known as the Bell Telephone Building

Originally built as a 14 story building.
In 1929, Bell Telephone needed more room and they added 14 more stories.

That's all for today.  I apologize for the long, picture heavy post.  This area was also one of the first adventures I went on. The whole adventure was the art exhibit but I parked blocks away so I could walk the big loop.

Until tomorrow.

Kansas City Kansas Black History Month and KCK Legacy Trail

I feel it is very important for all Americans to support the 11 holidays the orange man has set aside.   Black History Month is one of the 11 holidays.  This will probably the last Black History Month event I go this year.  We are starting today at the Kansas City Kansas Public Library.

Black History Month Challenge
You had to answer questions using the board on the right.
The board on the left gives the answers.

I got a prize!

Power of a Dream shopping bag, cup, pen, magnet, bracelet and button.
That is a great prize.

I got one question wrong.  Who was the first African American to win Wimbledon?
Choices: A) Althea Gibson B) Arthur Ashe C) Jesse Owens

I selected B) Arthur Ashe.  The answer is A) Althea Gibson. She won in 1957.

Next, one of the started but not finished adventures is the KCK Legacy Trail.  There are two journeys right now: Eastern European and Latino.  They are planning to add more.

St. Mary's Catholic Church/ now Police Athletic League

The police bought the church after St. Mary's merged with another church.  The stained glass windows are still intact.  The pews have been removed and a boxing ring is now installed.

Cornerstone

There are 3 policemen assigned to the Police Athletic League.
They have sports, crafts, community garden, bees and more.
It's designed for kids but seems to be more of a community center.

Strawberry Hill Museum and Center

I went on a tour here when I first moved to Kansas City.
This was once a home then later an orphanage.
The tour said children might stay here during the week then go home on the weekends.

Next door is St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
They ran the orphanage next door.

They fly the American and Croatian flags.

On the other side of the curved wall.
To all the immigrants who brought with them their customs and values, their dreams and their hopes and enriched us all by making our world a better place to live.
Their names are listed around the wall.

They had a men's club but now includes everyone.

The school next to the club.

The original bell is still being  used.

The next stop is I-70.
The highway was built in 1957 on Strawberry Hill.
125 houses/over 200 families lost their home

Many immigrants lived in Strawberry Hill.
Each group had their own neighborhood.

Our last stop for the day, Krizman's Sausage.
Kansas City, KS had many meat markets.
Krizman's opened in 1939 by Croatian immigrants
My son and I went here for sausages last summer.
So good!

Just one last picture!

This building is next to the library.
They have covered up the original building.
The whole thing is in disrepair.

We still need to finish up the African American Heritage Trail.   I should be able to finish that in 1-2 posts.  I just need to finish up some of the started adventures.

It was fun today.  It was hot - nearly 60.  My comfort level is 60-70 degrees.

Until tomorrow.

Wine Tasting

Really out of my comfort zone but tonight I went a wine tasting.   The HOA president told me about it last Friday. I walk to the end of the...
