Yes - another tour. I took some of the pictures yesterday because rain was forecasted for today. I'm so glad I did because it was cold and misty. Yesterday I ran into another problem. Westport road was closed. I searched and found out yesterday evening there was an Iowa State University Marching Band Pep Rally. Last night during our walk Charlie and I could hear the band. This morning Westport was still packed and people in Iowa State shirts were everywhere.
Back to the tour.
Stop 1 - Methodist Church
This church and congregation dates backs to 1836.
It served as a school but that would later move to Allen School.
Stop 2 - Daughters of Old Westport
1986 tribute to John McCoy, Alexander Majors and Jim Bridger
I was in the wrong position for the sun. There was a giant map of trails.
1st Non Stop
This was just so neat. See the door and trim.
In the circle it said Federal. I wish I knew the history of this building
Stop 4 - Ewing-Boone Building (Kelly's Westport Inn)
One of the oldest surviving brick commercial building.
Built around 1851.
This building has served the community in many different roles.
Traders, Supplies, hardware store, drug store, grocery store, and now bar.
Stop 5 - Chouteau-Bridger Building
Connected to the Ewing-Boone Building. This building was originally built between 1850 and 1851.
The building once housed Westport's only newspaper during the 1850's.
The newspaper was shut down by Union soldiers in 1861 due to the pro-southern publications.
Union Captain Albert Wachsmann used the building as a outfitting store for wagon trains.
Stop 6 - Marby Hall
Mabry Hall was built in 1857 and originally known as Hebron Hall
2nd Non Stop
I found a brown sign
Stop 7 - Nathan Scarritt House
Oldest surviving frame house in Westport.
It was built around 1847-1852 by Dr. Boggs.
Nathan Scarritt was a prominent Methodist missionary, preacher, teacher, and real estate developer.
Scarritt and his family lived in the house from 1852 to around 1862.
Stop 8 - Allen Library
The oldest branch library in the Kansas City Public Library System.
Building was constructed between 1896 - 1898.
Stop 9 - Harris-Kearney House
Built in 1855 by John and Henrietta Harris.
It has been a tavern, Harris House Hotel, and
Headquarters for the Union Army during the Battle of Westport.
3rd Non-Stop Pryde's
I had to stop at Pryde's for pecan bars.
Stop 10 - Calvary Baptist Church
I think this is the old part.
New part.
1949 for the new part.
Old part
It might need some work.
Built in 1890
4th Non stop
This is the prettiest doorway.
Only one window has the trim. I wonder if all of the windows once had the trim.
That's my Westport tour. I saw some places I had never seen before. Lots of fun.
