Ward Parkway Driving Tour Part 1

I decided to go on a driving tour today.  It's cloudy and wet with rain forecasted for any minute now.

For my Wichita friends - Ward Parkway is like Zoo Blvd with a big median that is park like in the middle.  The speed limit is 35 but many people are going 40-50 +.  I wasn't the only person crossing the street.

It has places for cars to cross every block or two.

Back to the driving tour.  First thing I messed up.  I wanted to get the fountain so I kept driving past stop one.  Finally I reached the shopping center and I knew I had gone to far.  I turned on one of the cross roads and headed back.

Stop 1- Romany Road Fountain

Installed in 1930, the fountain and pool were built to enhance the new neighborhood.
The fountain has been replaced many times due to vandalism.

The fountain and pool were part of a sunken garden.
The steps are still here.  The garden is gone it's just grass now.

Not a stop #1 - The Eagle

.

The J.C. Nichols Company purchased it in 1935,
Wing span of 14 feet and weighs 2000 pounds.

Stop 2 - 69th Street Fountain

Another fountain with pool.

Not a stop #2 - Wall

I can't find anything about this but its pretty.

There were just random things like this urn.

Not a stop #3 - Avenue of Trees

Back side with the flag

Front side

As a Living Memorial to Our Dead of the World War.
This avenue of Trees is Dedicated.
4 bronze tablets lists the 440 sons and 1 daughter who died in World War 1.

Kansas City has really embraced World War 1.

Stop 3 - Meyer Circle Sea Horse Fountain

Placed by the Nichols Company in 1925.
The top figure was destroyed by vandalism in 1960.  Replaced with a replica.

This is the fountain I drove by and kept driving to find.

Stop 4 -Mirror Pool Fountain

This is so pretty.
I have posted this before

Ward Parkway - Great Streets 2012
They must not have tried to cross the street.

The Mirror Pool is across the street from this church.
The wooden life size last supper is here.

That's it for the day.  I will post more tomorrow.  We start going to the houses tomorrow.
