Yes, I'm still on the tour kick. Today we are walking around the National World War 1 Memorial to celebrate Veterans Day.
Stop 1 - The Hiker
The Hiker is for those who served in several early twentieth-century wars and conflicts. For example: Spanish-American war to the occupation of the Phillippines and others.
Stop 2 - 89th Division Memorial
Dedicated in 1948, this 70 foot memorial flagpole honors the 89th Division.
Stops 3 and 4 - South Fountain and National World War 1 Museum
Stop 5 - Sphinxes
The Sphinxes guard the south entrance to Memorial Court.
They sit above the main entrance of the museum.
Stop 6 - Liberty Tower and the Guardian Spirits
The tower is the focal point of the memorial grounds.
Built between 1923 and 1926. The tower stands 217 feet above the courtyard.
The four guardian spirits are located near the top of the tower.
The guardians were placed in 1925 during the construction of the tower.
They have been in constant watch over Kansas City ever since.
Stop 7 - Cinerary Urns
4 empty cinerary urns, 2 at Memory Hall and 2 at Exhibit Hall are for decorative purpose.
Stop 8 - The Great Frieze
This depicts the progression from the death and destruction of wartime to an idealistic image of prosperity in a time of peace.
Stop 9 - North Fountains
The two twin fountains sit below and in front of the Frieze.
One of them was over flowing.
Non-Stop - the Peace Tree
Stop 10 - Dedication Wall
Beatty
Foch
Pershing
Diaz
Jacques
This wall honors the 5 allied leaders who came together for the first time at
Liberty Memorials dedication ceremony in 1926.
That's it. Only one non-stop but it was for the peace tree so that was okay. Not sure where we will go tomorrow. I'm having trouble finding new things but I'm enjoying the tours.
See ya tomorrow.
