Quindaro Ruins and John Brown Statue

Today, as part the hunt I'm doing for Black History Month, we travelled to Quindaro Ruins.

Many battles punctuated the movement to establish and maintain Kansas as a free state during the Civil War period.  The quest for freedom exacted a heavy toll and caused many the ultimate sacrifice including John Brown the abolitionist.

Modern day battles were equally important to the survival of the township of Quindaro.  The battle to save the Quindaro Ruins and preserve a legacy of freedom was waged for nearly two decades.  During the early 1980's a plan had been approved to turn the Quindaro Euins area into a landfill.  A number of concerned citizens joined together to wage battle to fight the landfill and save and preserve what is left of the ruins.  After much sacrifice the battle was won.  This area is now a national freedom trail underground railroad network site.

The last 2 paragraphs are recognizing the people who fought the landfill.

From this overlook some of the Ruins from the Old Quindara township can be viewed and as preserved reminds us that Quindaro must live on in our hearts forever.  The area once mighty also serves as a reminder of man's mortality and of our quest for freedom, dignity and above all humanity.  As the freedmen and the exoduser passed through this place, there rang a commonality through their voices, that no man shall be subjected to slavery and that all men are free!

My next stop was just down the street.

John Brown

I'm not going to type these out.

It was very nice.

Across the street is the Vernon School.  Part of the school system that was setup for escaped slaves and black families from the area.

Recently this was the Old Quindara Ruins Museum but at the moment it is closed.

My selfie with Sinclair.  The sun was so bright I could not see.

Sinclair

I wish the museum was still open.  It's suppose to have a lot of items about the underground railroad.  I had to stop at the Sinclair station and for the selfie on the way home.  I stood on that busy street taking a selfie with a dinosaur.

I hope you enjoyed today's adventure.  I will be trying to finish up "The Hunt" this week.  I still 9 of 14 to do.  You have to check in at each stop.  I have been to one stop three times and can't get checked in.  It's very picky.  Hopefully we will finish by Friday.

Until tomorrow.
